People who forget passwords, that is my everyday struggle. For some of them I change password several times a week. Mail, SVN, domain, LDAP. Is undetermined amount of services. I’m not perfect. It happened to me after a long absence too.
I forgot the password to the system. It was fun, but also a deadlocks. Of course tools helped me enter the Windows (yes, it was about a Microsoft product that is easy to break). However, the problem of password remains. What to do to avoid this? Windows Security depends largely on the quality of passwords every registered user. In fact, every article moving subjects protection system and its data collected provides guidance on defining logon password. It should be enough long, consist not only of the small, but also lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. It is better to prosign random characters. However, if you follow this advice, you run the risk that (due to the long breaks from using the computer (eg. Holidays)) you forget the complicated password and you fail to login to the system.
Interesting fact – preparing properly stick, you can log in to the system without entering a password. Just slip pocket memory to the USB port. Simple? I hope, because it will solve basic problems to some of my clients. Let’s see how it works.
Using a special application, you can transform into a pocket USB drive key that opens the gate into the system at home and at work. Every Windows user can have its own memory stick, which automatically logs him into system. All he has to do is place it in the USB port after loading the operating system.
Rohos Logon Key program, which operates in all editions of Windows (both 32-bit and 64-bit), equip your stick in these functions. When you log in the system, this tool reads the key stored on a USB drive in an encrypted form, on that basis, establish password and introduced in the Windows logon. Login data contained on a stick are protected by AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with a key length of 256 bits. Pocket USB drive with the program Rohos Logon Key can provide access to multiple computers – eg. to the official PC in the company, a private home and a laptop.
The registered version (costing less than 30 euros) provides a two-step authentication PIN code, USB key, and logging ability of emergency in case the stick is damaged or lost. Thwarts attempt to get into the system through Safe Mode. Logging can be done not only through USB media, but also through Bluetooth enabled devices or SD / MMC card.
You must first be assigned secure passwords for all users of the system. A strong password must also be set to administrator account.
Less functional but free alternative provides a USB Logon program. However it is available (at least for now) only in the German language version.
