Google OnHub is new WiFi router produced by Google in cooperation with TP-Link. This new product from Google does not look like standard router to which we used to. It looks like cylinder and Google claims that his new modern shape provides better performance. We all hate problems with our WiFi connection, specially when it happens at the worst possible moment.
How does it look?
The installation and configuration process is simplified to an absolute minimum. For this purpose you use dedicated application for Android and iOS mobile device with Bluetooth – couple clicks and the network is ready. Instead of WPS button, the OnHub will beep (yes, it has a speaker) and your smartphone will be authenticated. This is just brilliant!
Configuration is brilliant, everything is shown in very user friendly application. You can check how many devices are connected to your network, their status, encountered problems etc. You can also define priorities for selected devices and connections. The router from Google is able to handle up to 128 devices and provides 1900 Mbps aggregated throughput.
Connection status is reported by subtle diode placed on top of the cylinder. It looks very stylish, so it will not be shame to place OnHub router on view. This is the intended purpose of designers. It is known that WiFi signal transmitted by router placed in the closet is propagated weakly. OnHub provides also good coverage thanks to 13 built-in antennas. Whay did they mounted so many antennas inside one router? They use 6 antennas for 2.4 GHz band and the second group of 6 antennas for 5 GHz band. Each of 6 antennas is pointed in different direction, so the range is longer than in case of single omnidirectional antenna. The 13th antenna is mounted on top and is used for interference discovering.
What will we find inside? OnHub is equipped in DualCore 1.4 GHz CPU with 1 GB DDR3 and 4 GB of internal e-MMC flash memory module. It supports 802.11b/g/n and 802.11a/n/ac standards. The OnHub itself will download and install new software, so our devices should be well protected. The only disadvantage is that it has only one 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN port. The price is about 200 USD. Is the OneHub worth it? I think that it depends on your expectations. It may be very good solution for less technically advanced users.
There are rumors that Google is working on similar product with Asus. However, for now we do not know anything more about this.
